Thank you! As an American expat — left the US in 1994 — I’ve been watching events in the US as though watching a foreign country. I had never made any attempt to contextualize antifa until I stumbled across the word in a autobiography on Joseph Goebbels and the rise of Nazi Germany. People forget or perhaps don’t realize the Nazis were first elected before quickly dismantling democracy under the banner of nationalism and preservation of German values threatened by outside forces and corrupting liberalism. These early antifa members literally put their lives on the line until the Nazi boot heel snuffed them out under the pretext that they were traitors or threats to the nation. Antifa was the canary in the coalmine warning all of what was to come if no one acted. “Silent resistance” of the type advocated by the anonymous White House official in the NYT piece is no resistance at all. It is simply a massaging of one’s conscience in the face of complicity.
