One Year Into My Web Development Startup — Here’s What I’ve Learned

A year ago I started a web design and development agency with a partner. Here are some technical and business lessons I’ve learned through the process.

Web Development is a Great Business

From a startup perspective, web development rocks. If you have a laptop and spare time you can start a web development business or make money as a freelancer. The startup costs are essentially negligible if you fully utilize freeware and open-source software. And you can run your business from anywhere. I love to tell people that I carry my entire business in my backpack.

Try All The Things

This is good advice for anyone who is searching for their passion or trying to find their niche. The more stuff you try, the more likely you are to find the thing you could see yourself doing indefinitely. At very least you can figure out the things you don’t like… the value of which shouldn’t be understated. What does that mean practically, though?

Well, let’s say you are just getting started with web development. You know you love the industry, you’re inspired by coders you follow on instagram, and a good webpage transition makes your knees weak. You think to yourself — I could totally do that, but where do I start?
