I completely agree. However it’s worth paying attention to the fact that Github’s service is paid for/supported by private organizations running repos in Github’s cloud.

Their main competitor, GitLab, is proposing the alternate model of consumer server control. I’d be doubtful that GitHub will ever encourage offline migration, but given their stellar community support I am open to being proven wrong.
