Hello friends!! As promised we are here with the first lesson, which is introduction to the alphabets.

In English there are vowels and consonants; similarly in Hindi also we have vowels and consonants. The difference is that in Hindi all the vowels appear in the beginning and the consonants form another group. Let’s start with vowels.

Vowels:

These are known as ‘swar’ in Hindi. Let’s have a look at them:

Don’t you start looking like this! They do appear weird, but they will be familiar in no time.

This table here explains the pronunciation of each vowel. In Hindi all vowels except अ have symbols which are attached with consonants. These symbols are very important when it comes to reading and writing.

For the examples mostly English words have been used to make it easier to understand.

Consonants:

Let’s move to the next group which are consonants. In Hindi they are called ‘vyanjan’. These are the consonants along with their pronunciation.

At first all the alphabets appear to be strange and convoluted, but if you look at them every day and practice they become easy to understand. I have omitted some of the alphabets which are not very frequently used and are difficult to pronounce too.

You may have noticed that some of the alphabets sound the same. Actually unlike English, in Hindi more tongue twisting is involved and the twist of tongue is what makes them different from each other. The basic pronunciation remains the same, but some are nasal and some guttural. To pronounce ‘ण’ you need to roll your tongue, while ‘न’ has nasal pronunciation.

Example: After learning the vowels and consonants, let’s try to write a simple word. Let’s try a name: Natalie. We have Na here, pronounced as ‘Nae’, Ta pronounced as ‘Ta’ and lie as ‘lee’.

For N we use न,

For t we use ट,

For l we use ल

Now attaching the symbols as required we will get ‘नैटली’.

Test Yourself:
