Jana Novotna (1968–2017)
This Monday, it was a regular day at work when I saw the news on Twitter that Jana Novotna passed away post a battle with cancer. The news came as a shock, and took me back to 1993 when she lost the Wimbledon final to Steffi Graf. Novotna’s tears moved me, even though as a Graf fan I had spent several anxious moments prior to the presentation ceremony.
Novotna went on to play in the final at Wimbledon in 1997, and won the title one year later in 1998. Graf did not play Wimbledon in 1997, and she lost early in the 3R in 1998.
I also recollected how she hailed from the Czech Republic, the same as Martina Navratilova and Petra Kvitova, who are her fellow Wimbledon champions.
Thank you, Jana for the Wimbledon memories. RIP. This was far too early.
