ANZAPPL 40th Congress Update
It is with some regret that I am writing to inform you that the 40th Annual ANZAPPL Congress, scheduled to run in November in Sydney, is being cancelled. As the COVID-19 crisis developed over the past month I have maintained close contact with the convening committee, headed by the ANZAPPL NSW President, Amanda White, to consider the implications for the Congress. Late last week we made the joint decision that the Congress should be cancelled to avoid significant financial burden on the branch, and the organisation more generally, should it not be able to go ahead or if it went ahead with significantly reduced attendance.
This is not a decision that we have taken lightly, and both the National Executive and the NSW Committee voted on it before we decided to cancel the Congress. We believe the inevitable uncertainty over the coming months would have a serious negative effect on conference submissions and registration. While we all hope that the situation will have returned to normal by November, ANZAPPL would be left with a very substantial cost that could not be covered if the conference went ahead with a reduced number of attendees.
Our plan is to run the conference in Sydney at the usual time in 2021. I would like to thank Amanda and the NSW convening committee for all the work they’ve put in over the past 6 months to get the Congress off the ground. I know that it has been a substantial workload, and that they are disappointed that we have had to take this course of action.
I will be meeting with the branch presidents next week to discuss the current situation and hope to work out a plan whereby ANZAPPL branches can develop some online activities or learning opportunities via the ANZAPPL members website. Both your branches and I will keep you posted about these activities as they can be organised and uploaded. We will also obviously keep you abreast of news for the 40th Annual Congress in 2021.
My very best wishes to you all.
