That’s a really good thing to think about: the competition. How is this different? How are the needs of my users different and what can I do to help them that’s going to assess some of those needs?

I agree with this consideration very much! I found that when borrowing some existing design patterns, sometimes I need to take a step back and consider the assumptions behind those patterns and the problems they’re solving. It could be that I am designing for a different audience or that my product has a different focus; so I need to be careful.
