When water begins to drain more slowly and all of a sudden, it becomes a pool, you know what that means. A clogged drain is an annoyance to your everyday bathroom use. If left unattended, this minor inconvenience can become a major problem for your plumbing.

For the smaller case issues, it’s a great idea to have a few at-home remedies ready to use when needed. As such, here are the best ways to unclog a drain.

  1. Things to Avoid

If you have a clogged drain or toilet, you would probably disregard it until it becomes a major inconvenience. It’s very frustrating to shower in a puddle or have a toilet that flushes and rushes its way back up, scaring the living soul that everything you have discarded comes back to haunt you. Sometimes the most obvious of solutions could be the last thing you want to do.

Clog remover solutions are not recommended by plumbers, despite the name, it actually harms the piping, especially if you have a history of a certain area of the pipe getting blocked. They are also not optimizable to be used in toilet bowls, as the chemicals can linger in the bowl itself, damaging the porcelain and in some cases, cracking the bowl.

2. Baking Soda & Vinegar Method

For a natural way to unclog a drain, try using baking soda and vinegar. These two are great to have in your household cleaning toolbox, as they can be used for just about anything, including small clogs. You’ll want to start with a pot of boiling water and pour that down the drain. Next, grab your baking soda and pour about a half cup down the drain. Let it sit for about a minute. Finally, mix a cup of hot water and a cup of vinegar. Let this stand for about five minutes before rinsing with tap water. Remember, this method works best for small clogs. If your drain is still pooling when this method is finished, it might be time to contact a pro.

3. The Soda Method

This method is a bit unconventional, but it works for small clogs! If you have a 2-liter bottle of coke, simply pour it down the drain and let the fizzing do the work. The ingredients in a coke can diminish small clogs and are less harmful than other solutions. Some damages the pipes severely. Rinse with warm water when the coke has drained.

4. Plungers

Some clogs take a little bit of elbow grease to remove. A plunger doesn’t necessarily mean it’s only used for toilets, so consider getting two more for your sink or shower drains. What people don’t realize is that there is a difference between all those plungers and they have different shapes for different purposes. If you use a sink plunger on a toilet, it will not likely have the same impact and your clog will still be present.

For your sink, you’ll want to choose a cup-shaped plunger. For a blocked drain in the toilet, you’ll want a plunger that has a cup-shaped head. For your toilet, you’ll want a plunger that’s bell-shaped, but with a small extension to the bottom that can fit into the bottom of the toilet, called the flange. The right plunger will work wonders when used properly.

5. Call a pro

Once you’ve tried all the solutions and receive no luck, it’s time to call the pros. The local plumbing services should always be in contact wherever you are as it is paramount to fix plumbing fixtures. With pro plumbers anything is possible and anything is fixable. The price may vary depending on the problem but with expenses comes results.
