GOSPEL — John 21:1 — 14

Jesus revealed himself again to his disciples at the Sea of Tiberias. He revealed himself in this way. Together were Simon Peter, Thomas called Didymus, Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, Zebedee’s sons, and two others of his disciples. Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.” They said to him, “We also will come with you.” So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing. When it was already dawn, Jesus was standing on the shore; but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus. Jesus said to them, “Children, have you caught anything to eat?” They answered him, “No.” So he said to them, “Cast the net over the right side of the boat and you will find something.” So they cast it, and were not able to pull it in because of the number of fish. So the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord.” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he tucked in his garment, for he was lightly clad, and jumped into the sea. The other disciples came in the boat, for they were not far from shore, only about a hundred yards, dragging the net with the fish. When they climbed out on shore, they saw a charcoal fire with fish on it and bread. Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish you just caught.” So Simon Peter went over and dragged the net ashore full of one hundred fifty-three large fish. Even though there were so many, the net was not torn. Jesus said to them, “Come, have breakfast.” And none of the disciples dared to ask him, “Who are you?” because they realized it was the Lord. Jesus came over and took the bread and gave it to them, and in like manner the fish. This was now the third time Jesus was revealed to his disciples after being raised from the dead.

Reflection:

We witness today another profound encounter between Jesus and His disciples, this time by the Sea of Tiberias. This post-resurrection appearance demonstrates Jesus’ ongoing presence with His followers and His care for their needs.

The scene opens with Simon Peter and several other disciples deciding to go fishing. Despite their efforts throughout the night, they catch nothing. At daybreak, Jesus appears on the shore, though the disciples do not recognize Him immediately. Jesus, in His characteristic compassion, asks if they have caught any fish. When they answer in the negative, He instructs them to cast their net on the right side of the boat. Obeying His command, they haul in an overwhelming catch of fish.

The disciple whom Jesus loved recognizes the miracle and declares, “It is the Lord.” Overcome with excitement, Peter jumps into the water to reach Jesus, leaving the others to bring the boat ashore. As they join Him on the beach, they find Jesus preparing a charcoal fire with fish and bread.

This scene is rich with symbolism and significance. The miraculous catch of fish echoes a similar event from early in Jesus’ ministry, underscoring His divine authority and provision. The abundance of fish not only serves as a tangible sign of Jesus’ power but also symbolizes the spiritual harvest that awaits His disciples.

Moreover, the charcoal fire recalls Peter’s earlier denial of Jesus, which took place beside a charcoal fire. Yet, here, by the fire prepared by Jesus, Peter is offered reconciliation and restoration. Jesus’ invitation to breakfast symbolizes His desire for fellowship with His disciples and His ongoing ministry of nourishing them spiritually.

Ultimately, this encounter by the sea serves as a reminder of Jesus’ continued presence with His followers even after His resurrection. Just as He provided for His disciples’ physical needs by the sea, Jesus continues to provide for us spiritually, offering us sustenance, guidance, and companionship on our journey of faith.

As we reflect on this passage, may we be reminded of Jesus’ constant presence in our lives, His abundant provision, and His unwavering love. Like the disciples, may we respond to His call, experience His miracles, and partake in the fellowship He offers, finding fulfillment and purpose in His divine presence. Amen.
