Mark 12:38–44

In the course of his teaching Jesus said, “Beware of the scribes, who like to go around in long robes and accept greetings in the marketplaces, seats of honor in synagogues, and places of honor at banquets. They devour the houses of widows and, as a pretext, recite lengthy prayers. They will receive a very severe condemnation.”

He sat down opposite the treasury and observed how the crowd put money into the treasury. Many rich people put in large sums. A poor widow also came and put in two small coins worth a few cents. Calling his disciples to himself, he said to them, “Amen, I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all the other contributors to the treasury. For they have all contributed from their surplus wealth, but she, from her poverty, has contributed all she had, her whole livelihood.”

Reflection:

Today, we are presented with two contrasting portraits: that of the scribes and that of the poor widow.

Jesus exposes the hypocrisy of these scribes, emphasizing that their actions have severe consequences. Their exploitation of widows, using religious pretenses, is condemned by Jesus, who sees the truth behind their external displays.

However, in the midst of this warning, Jesus directs His disciples’ attention to a poor widow who approaches the treasury. He observes as the wealthy individuals contribute large sums of money. Yet, it is the widow who catches His eye. With humility and sacrificial love, she places two small coins worth only a few cents into the treasury.

Calling His disciples to Himself, Jesus declares a profound truth: “Amen, I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all the other contributors to the treasury. For they have all contributed from their surplus wealth, but she, from her poverty, has contributed all she had, her whole livelihood.”

In this encounter, Jesus reveals the true measure of generosity and devotion. It is not the amount of money or possessions that we give but the disposition of our hearts. The widow, though materially poor, offers her entire livelihood, demonstrating a deep trust in God’s providence and a willingness to give sacrificially.

Her act of giving becomes a powerful lesson for us all. Despite her poverty, she does not hold back or make excuses. Instead, she offers everything she has, displaying a profound faith and a heart filled with love for God.

Through this widow’s example, Jesus teaches us that true generosity is not dependent on our material abundance but on the depth of our love and trust in God. Whether we have much or little, it is the attitude of our hearts that matters. God does not measure our offerings by their monetary value but by the sincerity of our sacrifice.

Let us reflect upon our own lives and examine our giving. Are we like the scribes, seeking recognition and honor for our charitable acts? Or are we like the widow, giving from a place of selflessness and genuine devotion?

Jesus calls us to examine the motives behind our actions and to cultivate a spirit of sacrificial love. He desires that we give not only out of our abundance but also out of our poverty, offering our whole selves to Him.

As we strive to follow the example of the poor widow, let us remember that our giving is not limited to material possessions. We can offer our time, talents, and resources for the service of others. We can give our love, compassion, and forgiveness to those in need. Every act of kindness, no matter how small, can make a significant impact when done with a heart fully devoted to God. Let us pray for the grace to imitate the widow’s generosity and selflessness. May our giving reflect the depth of our love for God and our trust in His providence. And may our lives be a testimony to the transformative power of sacrificial love. Amen.
