Problem

Some apps on macOS keep the CPU busy unnecessarily. For example, Logitech’s G Hub, an app that lets you customize your Logitech mouse/keyboard, keeps running at 25% CPU, while its helper process lghub takes up around 1000% of CPU! This seems to be the case on Windows too, and I think Logitech needs to address this issue asap.

But it’s not just Logitech G Hub. Tons of other apps also use huge amounts of CPU for no good reason. When that happens, your battery drains quickers, your Mac gets hotter, and your system becomes slower. Is there a way to fix this issue?

Solution

Today I found out that it’s possible to limit an app’s CPU usage on Mac. Here’s how to do it:

  • On older versions of macOS (up to Yosemite), you could use an app called CPU Throttle. However, since it doesn’t run on newer versions of macOS, Homebrew removed it from their repo. If you’re still on Yosemite (or older), check out this page to learn how to use CPU Throttle.
  • On newer versions of macOS, there are other options. If you’re on an Intel Mac (all Macs prior to 2021), you can use AppPolice, which is open-source and free.
