This article was a fun read for me. I’ve been on UNIX/Linux systems since grad school complete with writing papers in Latex! I don’t want to go back to writing papers in Latex but what I think is wonderful about Linux is command line control for engineers and non-engineers alike.
If you want to try out a Linux distribution without going all in, there used to be Damn Small Linux (update: it’s been dormant since 2008) which will run on a USB drive (this was pre-cloud era) or there is likely a Dockerized system you can try out.
I’ve taken an old Compaq laptop which had the most hated Windows Vista on it and replaced it with Gentoo. It still runs to this day.
Whatever your motivation, it’s definitely worth using.
