For the first time ever, shoppers are going to the web for most of their purchases.

An annual survey by analytics firm comScore SCOR -1.66% and UPS UPS -0.35% found that consumers are now buying more things online using Buy and Sell Script than in stores.

The survey, now in its fifth year, polled more than 5,000 consumers who make at least two online purchases using Buy and Sell Script in a three-month period. According to results, shoppers now make 51% of their purchases online, compared to 48% in 2015 and 47% in 2014.

The latest results of the survey about Buy Sell Script now in its fifth year, illustrate the degree to which the adoption of online shopping is accelerating. This year, 44% of smartphone users said they made a purchase from their device, up from 41% a year ago. It also helps explain why retailers are having so much trouble adjusting to the new cyber shopping era.

Consumers Are Now Doing Most of Their Shopping Online

Not too many years ago most people shopped in their local stores complete with parking and weather problems, long lines, and wobbly shopping carts. Even when online shopping was available, people felt uncomfortable using their credit cards and giving their personal information to cyber-shops. That has all changed.

Growth of Buy Sell Script has been characterized by strong consumer demands and the increasing number and type of goods available. An 11% annual increase in parcel volume is likely to continue according to Australia’s Postal Chief Executive. Physical stores are moving at least part of their companies online in order to cut costs.

The internet is only going to become more popular as time goes by and purchasers worldwide become more comfortable about the security and on-time delivery of their purchases. This Buy Sell Script is the one area of merchandising that continues to have a positive outlook far into the future.

The shoppers reported that only 20% of their purchases were made in a store the conventional way going to a store, browsing there and buying down from 22% a year ago. Forty-two percent chose to search and buy entirely online, while the rest said their purchases were made by combining online and in-store shopping and browsing.

E-commerce sales in 2014 accounted for 6.5 percent of total sales. E-commerce sales in 2013 accounted for 5.8 percent of total sales. The Quarterly Retail E-Commerce sales estimate for the first quarter of 2015 is scheduled for release on May 15, 2015.
