Are Chinese apps outperforming American?

Plenty of Chinese apps have gained significant popularity even with concerns about data privacy and security, and millions of Americans use them on a daily basis. However, how popular are Chinese apps in the USA?

Only 10 of the 500 apps that have been downloaded the most in 2023 come from Chinese companies. However, four of them are in the top five. Temu, TikTok, CapCut, and Shein are four apps that have become practically household names at this moment.

A popular video editing tool used by TikTok makers is called CapCut, which is also owned by Bytedance, the parent company of TikTok. In order to compete with Amazon, Shein, the biggest fast fashion seller, has been extending its product range to include everything. Despite being formed in China, it did relocate its main office to Singapore due to East/West commercial challenges. Temu is a recently popular e-commerce app in the U.S. that offers almost anything for dirt cheap and is owned by China’s Pinduoduo.

Four Chinese apps were in the top 50 most downloaded apps in the United States in 2021, but only one was in the top five. Three apps made the top 50 in 2022, while only one reached the top five. It was the same app in both years, with TikTok as the #1 app.

Honestly, it’s amazing that in the USA — a country where Apple, Google, and Meta reign — only 1 has one of the 5 most downloaded apps in the country so far this year. Instagram of Meta is #4. This demonstrates the increasing global capability of Chinese app development as well as their capacity to compete with and perform better than the wealthy American talent.

Out of the 500 highest-grossing apps in the U.S. this year, 36 are owned by Chinese companies in terms of in-app purchase income. Each and every one of them — aside from TikTok — is a mobile game. 16 of the top 500 apps are developed by Chinese enterprises, according to the same statistic for average MAU. The top 25 apps include TikTok, WeChat, CapCut, and Temu, but the remaining 12 apps are far further back on the list.

On the other hand, 19 of the 500 apps that have been downloaded the most in China this year come from American corporations. Since Google Play is not permitted to be used in China, this is entirely based on data from iOS devices. I don’t read Chinese newspapers, but I’m curious if there are similar security issues with apps like Instagram or Google Maps?
