We have no such interrogation. You need to apply for a license, as I understand it, but some places (like Vegas) you can just get married on the spot. I think it might have something to do with old inheritance/dowry laws?Like, you weren’t allowed to marry someone in society “secretly” in England, because they were “protective” of their daughters. In any case, this is why people ran away to Scotland to get married (a la Lydia and Wickham in Pride and Prejudice originally intended, or said they intended in any case). Gretna Green was famous for blacksmith weddings, as in people getting married at the first place they saw in Scotland. That last part is actual fact, I’m just speculating on the reasons behind it. I refuse to google it because this is fun.
