“Mess with a tiger, you get the claws!” Paramount Animation has revealed the first look teaser trailer for an animated action movie titled The Tiger’s Apprentice, adapted from the same book series. The animated project has been in development for years, and after finally starting production in 2020, the studio decided to cancel the theatrical release and instead send it directly to streaming on Paramount+. Which is a shame because this looks worthy of being seen in theater! Tom Lee, a Chinese-American boy, after the death of his grandmother, discovers he is part of a lineage of magical protectors known as the Guardians. With guidance from a mythical tiger named Hu, Tom trains up to take on Loo, a force that is as powerful as a Guardian but with evil intentions to use magic to destroy humanity. The Tiger’s Apprentice stars Henry Golding as Mr. Hu and Brandon Soo Hoo as Tom, with Lucy Liu, Bowen Yang, Jo Koy, Sherry Cola, Leah Lewis, Sandra Oh, and Michelle Yeoh. Not a lot of footage in this first teaser, but enough to get your attention.

The life of Chinese-American teenager Tom Lee changes forever when he discovers he is part of a long lineage of magical protectors known as the Guardians. With guidance from a mythical tiger named Hu, Tom trains up to take on Loo, a force that is as powerful as a Guardian but with evil intentions to use magic to destroy humanity. To have a fighting chance against Loo, Tom must reunite all twelve Zodiac animal warriors and master his own newly discovered powers. The Tiger’s Apprentice is directed by animation filmmaker Raman Hui, co-director on Shrek the Third and director of both Monster Hunt 1 & 2, plus animation director on the TV series “DreamWorks Dragons” & “Dragons: Race to the Edge”. It’s also co-directed by Yong Duk Jhun and Paul Watling. The screenplay is by David Magee and Christopher L. Yost. Based on the novel written by Laurence Yep. Produced by Bob Persichetti, Sandra Rabins, Jane Startz. Animated by Paramount Animation & Mikros Image Europe. Paramount will debut The Tiger’s Apprentice streaming on Paramount+ starting on February 2nd, 2024 early next year. First impression? Look good?
