Vandalism- A crime

We came up with three ideas about our Mega Project. Our first plan was to visit government school with some laptops and then holding a three days session there, where we would eventually teach them about MS Office, business writing skills, how to email someone, how to make assignments, and other basic things regarding the computers.

The second plan was raising funds and then visiting an orphanage where we could spend time with children, buying gifts for them, making little goodies for them and not to forget the bright smile which will be there on their faces J because of our little effort.

The third proposal was about raising awareness regarding vandalism. Vandalism is simply destruction and damaging of the public places. The major part in it is graffiti-graffiti is vandalism and vandalism is a crime.

After much brainstorming and pondering over different ideas, we chose to work on eliminating vandalism. In Pakistan, there has been no remarkable or appreciable work done on vandalism or for vandalism till now. Although the topic seems to be very unimportant, but it is not actually.

Because of vandalism, Pakistan has faced the loss of its priceless heritage. Monuments and mound missed the opportunity of having a natural history museum in district Chakwal. The Lahore fort and Shalimar garden have come in the endangered world heritage list. Harappa and some more archaeological sites and historical buildings have failed to appear on the World Heritage List. Vandalism caused the extinction of the rare Mughal hydraulic system and the rear wall of the Tomb of Jahangir was demolished to create a VVIP gate. We have lost a lot.

The worst part of it all? Up till now there has been no awareness instilled among people about it. They don’t even consider it as an issue. So this is a big challenge to convince people regarding this serious and worth noticing issue.

We will try to build awareness in people by using social media including some well-known websites especially used for entertainment purposes and by visiting different schools , colleges and universities and by using banners as well.

We’ll make a page on Facebook and will post different stuff like many related videos about it from time to time. We plan to make videos ourselves as well and upload them on different forums and pages. We will try to grab attention of teenagers because they are mostly found to be involved in such activities like wandering with friends and destroying public property for political or social causes. We will try to involve media as much as we could because this could lead to the involvement of some officials as well and who knows that a law maybe passed declaring it as a social crime as laws are passed here overnight.

We’ll visit educational institutes. Although the people there will be literate but we’ll still try to convince them to play their role in this issue.

Finally we’ll design banners. As we won’t be requiring funds, we hope money will not be a challenge.

We plan to do this task within two weeks. In first week we’ll design banners and work on our Facebook page followed by visiting educational institutes and public places with banners.
