Oak Forest Canyon Natural Area
Located near Beverly Crest, Oak Forest Canyon Natural Area is a nature reserve in Los Angeles. The area is home to a variety of native plant communities, and there are many hiking trails available for visitors to explore. Some of the most popular trails include the Oak Manor Labyrinth, the Willow Trail, and the Sequoia Audubon Trail. These hikes provide incredible views, and the canyon walls are reminiscent of the sandstone gorges of the southwest.

The riparian corridor of the San Diego River flows through the park, and the trail is lined with oak woodlands and coastal sage scrub. There are also willows and cottonwoods. During late winter, the area is awash in blooming wildflowers. For a closer look at these plants, you may want to check out the One Father Junipero Serra Trail. This trail is only a few miles from the city, and it offers excellent views of the valley and Santa Monica Mountains.
Another popular route is the backbone trail, which links six natural areas in the area. This is one of the premier recreational resources of the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy. In addition, the trail is a gateway to over 65,000 acres of open space. It provides a scenic, low-cost way to get to and from Oak Forest Canyon Natural Area.
If you’re looking for more adventure, take a hike to the top of Sandstone Peak. You can explore native plant communities and get a spectacular view of the East Bay. At the end of your trek, you’ll be rewarded with a picnic spot.
Another option is the Deervale-Stone Canyon Park. This 2.4-mile loop is a rewarding hike with spectacular views. From there, you can continue your exploration along the Las Virgenes Creek, which is home to the best wildflowers in the area. Alternatively, you can take the 2-mile out-and-back route.
Finally, there are plenty of other options for hiking in the Santa Monica Mountains. The Backbone Trail offers access to more than 60 natural parks. Those interested in a more challenging trek can take a 3.9-mile route through the Briones Regional Park.
While the trails in the area are relatively small, there are still plenty of opportunities to explore. There are a number of other parks in the area, including Encinal Canyon Park, Will Rogers State Historic Park, and Mulholland Drive parkland. Many of the parks in the region offer camping.
Depending on the time of year, you can expect to see the majority of native plants in full bloom. This includes the redwoods at the UC Davis Arboretum. In addition, the Loma Alta Open Space has several trails. Depending on the weather, the trails can be very steep.
If you’re not ready to tackle the trails, visit the nearby shopping malls, such as the Sherman Oaks Galleria. The ArcLight Theater is just a few minutes away, and there are several restaurants in the area. Other attractions to consider in the area are the ArcLight Center and the Sherman Oaks Hospital.
