The Dangers Of Love Potion
Love month is just fleeting around in a corner and of course it’s Valentine’s Day again in a month so I thought of doing a research about love potion and the dangers of it- particularly Amortentia which is mentioned in the 6th Harry Potter movie.
Amortentia is known to be the most powerful love potion and characterized by a distinctive mother of pearl sheen and its steam rises in characteristic spirals. Amortentia also smells differently to the drinker according to what attracts them. (Source: “Amortentia” from The Harry Potter Lexicon; https://www.hp-lexicon.org/magic/amortentia/)
“Powerful infatuations can be induced by the skillful potioneer, but never yet has anyone managed to create the truly unbreakable, eternal, unconditional attachment that alone can be called Love.” — Hector Dagworth Granger
Amortentia causes a powerful infatuation or obsession on the drinker.
“Amortentia doesn’t create actual love, of course. That’s impossible. But it does cause a powerful infatuation or obsession. For that reason, it is probably the most dangerous potion in this room.” — Professor Horace Slughorn from Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (Source: “Amortentia” from The Harry Potter Compendium; https://harry-potter-compendium.fandom.com/wiki/Amortentia#:~:text=Amortentia%20doesn’t%20create%20actual,dangerous%20potion%20in%20this%20room.)
This potion’s drinker is described to appear “pale” and “sickly” and becomes obsessed with the object of their affection.
Amortentia got its name from “Amor” which means love (Amor is known to be the Roman god of love) and “Tentia” which means held.
