Princess bint Haya al-Hussein (45), wife of Emir of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum (69), was reported to have fled Dubai, taking 31 million euros with her. In addition to carrying tens of millions of euros, Princess Haya also reportedly took her two children, namely Zayed (7) and Al Jalila (11). According to some reports, the money she is carrying will be used to start a new life away from Dubai.

According to the reports, Princess Haya and her two children are currently suspected of hiding in London after a dispute with Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid of Dubai. A source said that Princess Haya is known to have submitted a divorce letter before flying to Germany to seek political asylum. Various Arab media stated that Princess Haya’s escape to Germany was assisted by a German diplomat.

Responding to the news, the Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum had reportedly asked the German authorities to return his wife, but the source stated that the German government refused the request to send Princess Haya back to Dubai. After this case, diplomatic relations between Germany and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are evidently heating up.

Responding to his wife’s drastic step, the Sheikh Mohammed also expressed his anger through his personal Instagram account. In the post, the Sheikh even called his wife a “traitor”.

“Just go to the person who (at the moment) keeps you busy,” wrote the Sheikh.

Princess Haya, who is a half sister of the King of Jordan, was known to have married Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum in 2004. The breakdown of their marriage was also a new trial for Sheikh after one of his children, Princess Latifa, had also fled last year. She ran away from the royal palace and sought political asylum in the United States. However, the Sheikh managed to force his daughter back in the UAE.
