Apple Vision Pro; Ideas, opportunities, and future

Since the announcement of Apple Vision Pro, I have been thinking and reading about the possibilities that can come after. I have spent hours seeing WWDC 2023 hearing what are the functionalities and how users can interact with this device. Below, you can see what Apple Vision Pro is, what are its use-cases and what is the future of a Spatial computing device from the lens of a futurist.

I should say the device is mind blowing. Not because it is the first one, which is definitely not, but it is best of its kind. Putting User Experience and functionality in center by spending countless hours of effort for building details that makes a perfect product. Just like rest of Apple’s products.

“Apple Vision Pro is a the first Spatial device” Tim Cook said. It is not an AR or VR headset. It is a “Spatial” device. This means it is a new category of devices like smartphones, smart watches, and so on. It has its own user-interface and operating system. Apple understood the future is not in smartphones frames but in the environment that we interact in.

They history of VR/AR headsets goes back to 2014 where Google announced cardboard VR headsets and I believe Apple has been working on Vision Pro since then. There needed time and advances in technology to build a device that brings “additional reality” to the existing surrounding reality. This includes vision, 2 4K displays, spatial audio, and super high-performing chips handling eye-blowing 3D contents. This is how Apple positions itself. Releasing products when they are ready for use!

However, it will take couple of years for this new technology to pave its way to our lives. For now, it is only accessible in US early 2024.

It is going to reshape couple of things:

• Entertainment: Think about instead of seeing a game on a TV, you can be present in it! This brings a whole new experience to the entertainment industry including gaming. Movie makers can even create interactive movies where audience is surrounded in the environment.

• Productivity: Think about your work table contains not only your monitor but tons of other tools which you can bring on.

• Learning: Have you seen Harry Potter? How their news papers work? Well, this is it! Content is no longer limited to 2D text written on a monitor, rather, it can be shown in a 3D format, bringning the learning to a whole new level. This can be really beneficial specially for medical studies, physics, and so on.

Seeing 3D contents makes learnings

• Interactions and Collaborations: Zoom meetings will never be the same! No matter how distant you are from your peers, partners and colleagues, you can sit in the same room and communicate. This is an evolution in virtual calls which makes distance less noticeable just like what smartphones did by replacing emails.

Future

How do you experience reality? By seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, and touching. Vision Pro made seeing and hearing identical to reality. It is a revolutionary device changing lots of experiences. However, once our Brains get connected to the smart devices, it can bring the Human-computer Interaction to the whole new level. You probably won’t need to type anything. You can do things by just thinking about them. The technology is already there. It was not long ago which this news hit the headlines: “Brain chip allows paralysed man to post first ever ‘direct-thought’ tweet”

Further, once this connection is established as a double-sided interaction, meaning that the device could also be used to input your brain, man, this is going to be so much fun! There have been many recent advanced in the field of neuroscience building tools that can help people get more focused and reduce their anxiety. It can directly input visuals, senses, emotions… . We probably won’t need our physical body anymore.

Future has always been scary and fascinating at the same time. Hopefully we can pass it through without turning it into Terminator :)
