paracetamol

The world wide incidence of paracetamol poisoning in children by accidental overdose is relatively high. We have various methods to prevent such mistakes, like child safe bottles etc.

My suggestion is a simple one. One more idea to reduce the incidence of paracetamol toxicity.

Labeling of all paracetamol syrup in uniform manner.

We have one syrup telling 5 ml containing 120 mg. Another one has 250mg per 5 ml. Another formulation has 125 mg per 5 ml. Another one has 240 mg per 5 ml. And one drops has 100 mg per 1 ml . And there is one syrup having 500 mg per 5 ml.

Now can you all see the huge confusion out there. For the busy mother, who is working and taking care of children, it is devastating if she bought the wrong formulation or gave the wrong dosage.

To simplify , I request all the manufacturers to label their paracetamol based on 1 ml contains so much of paracetamol.

Like 1) the drops will show — 1 ml contains 100 mg

2) the syrup form will show 1 ml contains 24 mg.( the old label- 5 ml containing 120 mg form)

3) Another syrup will show 1 ml contains 25 mg.( the old label -5 ml containing 250 mg )

4) the next syrup will show 1 ml contains 48 mg.( the old label- 5 ml containing 240 mg )

5) the next syrup will show 1 ml contains 100 mg. ( the old label 5 ml has 500 mg )

I hope someone listens and makes the labeling uniform so that we tell the parent what each ml contains.

Thank you
