Summer School for Women in Mathematics and Statistics by International Centre of Theoretical Sciences, Bangalore

What is SWMS Program?

The Summer School for Women in Mathematics and Statistics Program is organized by International Centre for Theoretical Sciences is intended for the first year girls students pursuing BSc/ BE/ Btech or equivalent degree and having Mathematics as a major subject in their course.

The School gives young girls the exposure to different areas in Mathematics and Statistics at the undergraduate level.

How to apply?

In 2021, the application forms were available in the month of May. The selection process was purely based on your performance in 10th and 12th classes.

How was my experience in this program?

I was amongst the top 75 applicants from across India to be selected for this program. I got to know about this program via my college seniors. In 2021, the program took place from July 14 to July 25. Usually, the program is held in offline mode at their centers in Bangalore, but this year it went online.

We had sessions on different areas in Mathematics by the speakers: Siva Athreya (ISI Bengaluru), Purvi Gupta (IISc., India), Anita Naolekar (ISI Bengaluru) and Dootika Vats (IIT Kanpur) on Integral Calculus, Discrete Geometry, Linear Algebra and Probability and Statistics using R programming. Being a Btech student, I loved the R programming sessions by Dootika Vats.

Each day, we had Popular Science Talks, by different researchers across the country, on different topics like Groundwater reservation, Mathematical models for Infectious diseases, designing algorithms on data etc. The best talk I liked was on “What is the geometry of the Universe?” by Radhika Gupta. During this program, everyone was encouraged to explore different areas in Mathematics. We solved many assignments, some in Breakout Rooms, which helped us clear our doubts. Although it was quite tough for me to manage my college classes along with this program, But I really learned a lot from this program.

I would highly recommend all the eligible candidates to apply for this program and get the most out of it.
