Forty years after Deborah, the Israelites fall into sin again and are oppressed by the Midianites, who are their distant relatives through Keturah — the woman Abraham married after Sarah died. The Israelites are so oppressed and afraid that they hide in caves to escape the Midianites.

After 7 years, the Israelites cry out to God. Rather than sending another judge, God sends a prophet to speak truth and call out their sin. The prophet reminds them of how God has delivered them in the past and warns them that their current suffering is a result of turning away from Him.

Despite their disobedience, God still shows mercy towards His people. He raises up Gideon, the youngest son of Joash from the tribe of Manasseh, to be a deliverer for Israel. While threshing wheat in a winepress to hide from the Midianites, the Angel of the Lord appears and addresses Gideon as a mighty warrior.

Gideon questions God’s choice, citing his family’s low position in Manasseh and lack of military might. However, God assures him that He will be with him and promises victory over the…
