A Levite and His Concubine

Chapter 19 opens with a reminder that Israel has no king at this point. During this time, there is a Levite whose concubine decides to leave him, but he tries to win her back. After several days, he decides to go to her father’s house to try and persuade her to return with him. Her father welcomes him and they spend a few days there.

After staying for five days, the Levite finally convinces his concubine to come back with him. As they journey home, they stop in Gibeah, a city belonging to the tribe of Benjamin. An old man from the city invites them to stay with him for the night, but they are soon surrounded by wicked men who demand that the Levite be given to them so they can sexually assault him.

The old man offers his virgin daughter and the Levite’s concubine instead. The Benjamites don’t like this offer, but the Levite saves himself by sending his concubine out to them. The concubine is then brutally raped and abused all night, and she eventually dies at the doorstep of the…
