The AR irruption

The world goes “augmentedly real”! There is a bunch of publications on media telling about companies hardly associated with AR implementing the technology in everyday activities.

Ebay announces its willing to make online shopping more fun by using the AR tools. Mohan Patt, EBay’s vice president of buyer experiences, says in an interview: “The goal is to expand EBay’s customer reach beyond mission-shoppers who know precisely what they want to enthusiasts in different categories seeking inspiration”.

Okay, Ebay, that’s totally cool but, to be honest, not surprising.

What we suppose quite surprising is that AR comes to heavy industries, for instance. Vancouver-based RealWear has raised $17 million for its AR wearable device aimed at workers in construction. We’re talking about hands-free HMT-1 which is to be worn around safety helmet.

We have targeted this for industrial use,” said Lowery, in an interview with VentureBeat. “We have architected a wearable computer that fits into different protective equipment, like snapping into a hard helmet. It’s similar to [the now-discontinued Google] Glass, but designed for outdoor usage.

The HMT-1 offers remote mentor video calling, document navigation, guided workflow, mobile forms, and industrial internet of things data visualization, and it currently operates in 10 languages. It allows workers to operate other tools needed for the job, even if climbing a scaffold or tower, in noisy, dusty, or even dangerous environments. Allowing the worker to maintain full situational awareness, HMT-1 is faster, safer, and smarter than either a tablet or smart glasses”.

At the moment just a few companies of a “real sector” implement or plan to implement technical innovations on the AR technology basis. It’ll take a real short while though to start widely using all the newest possibilities. The Arcona ecosystem being a platform for quite any especially geographically specified AR content will help business projects of a different range and field to find a suitable solution.
