Since, the past five decades, Geophysical surveys are being conducted across the globe so as to determine the characteristics of the surface beneath the Earth by gauging the physical differences between different types of rocks and other physical discontinuities through drilling, digging or tunneling. The main objective of conducting these surveys is to create models and maps that point toward earth’s stratigraphy, geography, rock distribution along with the delineation of the geological structure.

Besides being widely used for the exploration of oil and natural gas resources, these surveys are also used for wide range of purposes such as detecting ground water, checking foundations before construction of roads and buildings, doing ample research for determining environmental concerns while reduce the perils with natural occurrences such as landslide and more. This particular kind of survey can be classified into seismic and non-seismic surveys both of which provide useful and informative detail depending on the purpose why these surveys are being conducted.

In both land and marine surveys a source and a receiver is involved. However, they might differ on the pattern of the receiver system, deliberation of measurements taken within a given area; and the kind of sensor or receiver used. These surveys are temporary, as well as transitory and are the least intrusive and cost-effective method of comprehending where oil and gas resources are actually located.

Benefits of these Surveys:

Different types of geophysical surveys provide critical data that could be utilized for the benefit of society, as well as enhancing the quality of life. Today, with technological advancements in this area, finding, drilling and producing natural oil and gas with the least possible risk and impact to the environment. In fact, the advent of various geophysical technologies has helped operators enjoy reduced risk with respect to cost, security and damage to the environment.

Apart from this, the images of the surface below the earth’s surface provided by these surveys can provide information regarding the potential hazards of drilling in that particular area. Such analysis of the earth’s subsurface in advance of drilling could be availed through seismic techniques. These techniques, help in designing pathways that can operators reach the oil and gas reservoirs while steering clear of any dangerous and over-pressured zones that might cause potentially serious issues.

Since, most of the techniques that fall under this survey have been in existence for around half a century, they are proven and mature. What makes geophysical exploration all the more impressive is the way it is being conducted i.e. environmentally impressive way.
