I agree completely. Apartheid is a great example. I think the important thing to remember about what happened in South Africa is that corporations didn’t start divesting by osmosis. They received a lot of domestic and international pressure to do something. That’s when they started to remove their dollars.
It would be interesting to see the results if we had a similar concerted effort in the United States to pressure corporations and investors to divest from racist industries, i.e., private prisons, profiteering slumlords,(and then invest in sustainable community development)
There are so many levers to achieve this between labor strikes, boycotts, direct action protest against specific corporations, individuals and unions divesting their personal shares and 401ks. It just appears conversation hasn’t reached that point yet.
