There are many different movies on Amazon prime, Hulu, Netflix & Disney plus but there has Never been one based off a fanfiction. There are a lot of books and movies that make the exceptions or break. After the movie and the book have a ton of stuff in common and they also have different things. I believe what makes a well- functioning book / film is that it must grab the reader’s attention and not be bland or the viewer will sleep in the middle of it all. I believe Another thing that makes the book/film better is if they are similar for instance if there is a part in the book you really like that doesn’t show up in the movie I think that’s a deal breaker. There are many things that people consider that makes a movie/film good if there is a good plot to it because most people who read books or see films will read/watch it because the plot catches your attention so that is very important as well.

After initially begun off as a fanfiction written about member of One Direction band Harry styles and written on Wattpad by Amanda Todd. After a lot of one direction fans hyped it up, her work attracted so many viewers, Simon & Schuster signed Amanda Todd to a publishing deal & launched After as their own independent novel in followed by three sequels and a prequel. Now, director Jenny Paige and writer Susan McMartin bring After to the big screen in the 2019 where Amanda Todd got her name on the screen. changes are often made during the development process in order to summarize the plot of a full novel into a two-hour film. Throughout most of the context of After, the film tends to leave many of the most relevant scenes out of the novel throughout the movie in order to establish the romantic plot of Tessa Young and Hardin Scott.

The After Book was attacked for its representation of the interaction between Hardin and Tessa, with the biggest critique being that Hardin is highly manipulative and emotionally abusive towards Tessa. He’s trying to control all areas of her life, get her off campus, get in between Tessa and her high school partner, while also treating her ruthlessly. In the book, Hardin convincing Tessa to move in with him is more clearly a sign of his manipulation and an attempt to keep all this away from his friends. This all comes to the very end, as it is unveiled that Hardin’s friends tried to take Tessa’s virginity and she discovers that their whole romance was based on a lie. As well as the novel ends on a cliffhanger that we are all still waiting for. Their love is in pieces and Tessa is highly upset about Hardin’s disloyalty. Tessa is shown in end running away from Hardin and his friends once she discovers that it was all based on a lie. This shows young readers that the relationship that they have is abusive mentally and not healthy. I believe that is a good example of some things to watch out for in a mentally abusive relationship if you are in one.

The film seems to work a huge amount to minimize the destructive nature of Hardin’s actions and treatment of Tessa; it’s less aggressive than in the novel & more mindful of her values. As with the hook Hardin ends up taking Tessa’s virginity for a bet that is sort of like rape, which would have a negative impact on a lot of viewers. soon throughout the movie where Tessa is Seen by Hardin when he asks her out, and she says no, He takes that no by her pretty rough when he asks her out. Although she makes up her mind almost instantly, that’s her decision. In general, the film gives Tessa more of an organization that works to balance the complexities of her relationship with Hardin. She feels compelled to try to please Hardin instead of pleasing herself and making her values matter. And while Tessa is absorbed by Hardin, it’s all by her own will, rather than by the control of Hardin. We soon find out that Instead of being dared to take her virginity that he also told his friends that he’d make Tessa fall in love with him and he’d just conceal all his feelings for her. This is on video by one of Hardin’s friends and shared with Tessa toward the end of the movie. This is very important because this is one of the examples that shows the beginning of mental abuse of Tessa. Hardin has a obsession in Tessa In where he feels like he could change her, but Tessa is not giving in. This is very good for young audiences that shows a women power to not change for any guy and that it is very easy to be blindly in love.

Rather than ending on this cliffhanger, the film version sees Tessa struggle with the destruction that has arisen from the discovery of Tessa finding out. She tries to restore her connection with her mom even though that she knows it won’t be the same since Tessa picked a boy over her own mother. She also tries to restore her friendship with her ex-boyfriend from high school, who has now forgiven her for cheating on him and they are now close friends. She also moves back into her old dorm to also feel how it was before she met him. She has a lot of regrets from meeting Hardin and thinks if she never met him that her life would be perfectly on track but she ended up dropping everything for a boy she just met that also ended up ruining a lot of her relationships with the people she loved the most. The audience is targeted towards young Audience which I admire since a lot of teens can learn from these lessons since a lot of girls Including myself didn’t know what healthy love is.

She also works efficiently and effectively to make her life healthier, to change her field to something she desires rather than something realistic that everybody else had wished for, the only reason she went into the field she was currently in was because Tessa’s mom was pressuring her into going to a field where she will make a lot of money. This shows that you should go based on what you desire and not listen to anyone else’s dreams because at the end of everything you are going to be the one stuck with that degree. Hardin is also held responsible for his actions at the end of the movie which he tends to regret’s and misses all the memories that they had together because Hardin thinks that the end of it for them but little did he know that this was going to be a long road of events.

What Hardin did to Tessa’s not at all okay, and the film never presents his acts simply as a result of falling in love, which is possibly the case in the novel. Rather, it’s a valuable lesson in the film that Tessa learns about investing her faith and confidence in someone else. she doesn’t fully know and just is intrigued by the idea of of him and how mysterious he is. though Hardin attempts regain Tessa’s trust and love back. The film ends on a cliffhanger of a different kind, Leaving the audience and readers to wonder if Tessa is ever going to forgive Hardin for what he did to her. “There was so many things I should have said, could have said, and sure as hell would have said if I had known my days in heaven were numbered. Had I known that I would be cast out so soon, I would have worshipped her the way she deserves.” This is a perfect line to explain to the Audience that how Hardin treated Tessa was not okay whatsoever and if he could go back in time to treat her differently that he would. He explained many times in the novel that he did not treat Tessa the way she deserved to be treated to his friends. This is does not forgive the fact that he’s done many things to her but it does in some sense give an example to the people reading the novel that it is not okay to treat a female like that in any aspect.

With this end, it takes a directly forward path to where their relationship stands and what is soon to come after the discovery of Hardin’s original intent. It’s a lot more transparent and is in line with the other changes made to their characters for the film and their relationship. All of This falls into the right spot as you can see the characters trying to change at the end for example Tessa’s friend named Steph feels bad for Tessa and wants to tell her but she let her friends guide her. Hardin is already less mean and violent while Tessa is more open and blunter so it makes some sense for him to try to make things okay and calm between them instead of tension being there but it leaves the audience confused as to what is going to happen.

fans of the book may not appreciate the changes made to the movie since there is many things that are missing and many left out scenes that we adored in the book also since it doesn’t give Hardin and Tessa a happily ever after. after isn’t a typical romance movie because it ends so sudden but the ending Gage and McMartin eventually decided on is much more realistic and, arguably, a more healthy lesson to since After’s main Audience is preteen and teen girls. They want teenagers to Feel something, they want teenagers to want more from the movie and the readers and audience tend to fall in love with Hardin with his charming looks and accent. The more audience from preteen and girls means that it’s better for both the book and movie because it’s more views and more reads which means more money for producers and author. Where the After book has some questionable themes as its portrayal of a healthy loving relationship, The film works to fix the more controversial aspects of the novel. In fact Hardin and Tessa’s relationship in the book should not be even featured in the book nor the film, as it is incredibly Unhealthy as stated in the book there is a lot of mental abuse and Manipulation which is not fair for Tessa, it is a toxic and abusive relationship.

“Hardin is like a drug; each time I take the tiniest bit of him, I crave more and more. He consumes my thoughts and invades my dreams.”One time after another Tessa tends to forgive Hardin for mostly everything he does to her and Hardin tends to keep on making those same mistakes which is not okay because after every mess up Tessa is There to be with him in the end which shows the audience that it is okay to forgive someone for Being mentally abusive towards you no matter what awful thing they do to you but the After movie changes their characters and relationship enough so that their dynamic is much healthier since this a movie for teens and preteens its best to keep a lot of things which will affect the viewers in a good way instead of thinking Hardin’s and Tessa’s relationship was perfect when it Wasn’t at all and desiring to have that relationship. Although there was alot of things i disagreed with this film there is alot of things i believe that they did well on for converting the novel to a film and making sure that the people watching think that the relationship between Hardin and Tessa isn’t as bad as it’s said out to be.
