An annual incomplete guide to the best events for designers and creatives who want to get inspired, meet new people and expand their horizons.

As a designer of 20 years, attending events and conferences has been a vitally important aspect of my practice. Personally, I love nothing more than coming home afterwards with a notebook filled with new ideas, people to reach out to and genuine optimism for the kind of work we do.

Just before the beginning of a new year, I collect all the design, art and inspiring events that are on my radar in one place. From international art fairs to top-tier conferences on creativity, my list is expansive. Resources are meant to be shared, especially those that support inspiration and innovation. Here you’ll find 50+ creative events of 2020 that are on my radar, and hopefully they end up on your radar too.

1. FOG Art and Design

Date: January 16–19, 2020

Celebrating today’s most significant creatives and leading contributors to the worlds of design and visual arts, the fair assembles 45 leading international galleries, prominent 20th-century and contemporary design dealers and a weekend of exciting programming.

2. In/Visible Talks 2020

Location: San Francisco, CA

In/Visible Talks is a conference for creative professionals that celebrates the art of design. There’s no case studies here, this is the real deal about how creative work gets done. The speaker line up for 2020 includes Jennifer Morla, Jerome Harris, Antionette D. Carroll, and many more. With a happy hour to follow at the Museum of Craft and Design and several cultural partnerships that get you free tickets to local museums and art fairs, this event is not to be missed. A second day of workshops is also available for those who want to get hands on with their own creative practice.

3. Maison & Objet

Location: Paris, France

The leading home decor fair connecting the international interior design and lifestyle community. This year’s theme (RE) GENERATION, in celebration of their 25th anniversary, will set out to analyze the attitudes, desires and expectations of Generation Y and Z’s digital natives. A whole year’s celebrations will be devoted to these committed millennials who, confronted with the many current crises, are looking for a better world, changing the rules and revolutionizing consumer behavior in both the home and lifestyle sectors.

4. New Adventures

This year Nottingham’s future-focused digital design conference brings Tatiana Mac, Jeff Veen, Florence Okoye and more to the stage. Their fifth annual event will explore speculative and critical design, radical inclusivity, climate, sustainability, and much more.

5. Digital Thinkers Conference Awwwards

Date: January 23–24
Location: Tokyo, Japan

This multi-day event caters to designers, developers and digital dreamers and includes a 2- day conference, a day of workshops and design competition. The programming is brought to you by the team behind Awwwards, the most visited digital design awards platform in the world.

Every year they hold conferences in iconic cities across the globe including New York, Amsterdam, Paris, London and Los Angeles. Next up in 2020 after Tokyo is Amsterdam, then Toronto. And if you haven’t seen their playful conference branding it’s worth a look on its own.

6. IxDA Interaction 20

Date: February 2–7, 2020
Location: Milan, Italy

Interaction 20 is a week of design events, dedicated to design and its consequences, including a 3-day conference, an education summit, a local leaders retreat, a day of workshops, and a student design charette.

Interaction Week 2020 will bring together the brightest minds in design, as well as science, philosophy, psychology and business including Georgia Lupi, Awa Caba, Audrey Tang and more.

7. First Round

Date: February 14, 2020
Location: Portland OR

First Round is a one-day showcase of original presentations made to clients featuring initial design explorations for logo, identity, and branding projects brought to you by the folks behind Under Consideration. The day will include 30-minute talks from 12 speakers who will be sharing their unique stories that helped land their first clients. This event travels to different cities so if you miss Portland you might be able to catch the next one elsewhere.

8. Design Indaba

Known for hosting the best creative conference in the world, the Design Indaba Festival is an annual celebration of design and creativity, showcasing the hottest and most relevant talents across the creative sectors. It’s all about how creativity is creating a better world and they bring to the stage the best of the best who are doing just that. 9. Leading Design Conference

Now in its fifth year, Leading Design is a sell out conference for people leading design teams, overseeing design direction, or instilling a culture of design within their organizations. Past speakers have worked at Facebook, Netflix, IBM Design Studio, Spotify and Google. 10. Service Design in Government

Returning for the 7th year, Service Design in Government 2020 is the original public sector service design conference, attracting an international audience and program of passionate Service Designer professionals.

11. Mutek Barcelona

Since its first edition, the MUTEK festival has distinguished itself as an international rendezvous for original and avant-garde programming. The festival’s range strives to be diverse, with interests in both the experimental and the playful sides of digital creativity. MUTEK’s programming intends to create a sonic space that can support innovation in new electronic music and digital art. This is a world of constant evolution and incessant refinement — the “MU” in MUTEK refers consciously to the notion of “mutation”. 12. The Armory Show

The Armory Show is New York City’s premier art fair and a leading cultural destination for discovering and collecting the world’s most important 20th- and 21st-century art. Staged on Piers 92 & 94, The Armory Show features presentations by leading international galleries, innovative artist commissions and dynamic public programs. Since its founding in 1994, The Armory Show has served as a nexus for the art world, inspiring dialogue, discovery and patronage in the visual arts. 13. SXSW: Design Track

The design track at SXSW covers all aspects of this industry, from futuristic product design to design-thinking approaches that can be applied to numerous other disciplines, businesses, and organizations. This programming will examine how design informs our interactions, shapes our experiences, and plays a critical role in problem-solving.

14. AIGA Design Conference

Location: Pittsburgh, PA

This annual event makes its way to the Pittsburgh “City of Bridges” for their 2020 event. The conference will be defined by this theme of Bridges: Who are those in the creative communities building bridges to new ways of thinking, new ways of living, and new ways of creating? Who is challenging and rewriting established narratives, guiding old behaviors and institutions into a new, modern way forward? Who are the builders, the uniters? Together, we’ll explore crucial topics such as Design Ethics, D+I, Automation, Future of Work, Future of Cities, Food, and more.

15. Creative South

Creative South is a weekend of creative thinking, collaboration, and exploration. 2020 marks their 10th year and the speaker line up includes Jessica Bellamy, Lauren Hom, and Aaron Draplin. Attendees enjoy Ink Wars, workshops, talks focused on process and experience, and meeting old friends as well as making new ones. 16. OFFSET Dublin

18. Design Week Portland

Design Week Portland is a week-long, city-wide series of programs exploring the process, craft, and practice of design across all disciplines. Their mission is to increase appreciation and awareness about design and its far-reaching effects on matters of cultural and social relevance, including community development, education systems, and the economy. 19. Smashing Conference SF

Date: April 21–22, 2020
Location: San Francisco, CA

SmashingConf is focused on front-end and UX, but it covers everything web, be it interface design or machine learning. The fifth SmashingConf San Francisco will explore how to improve accessibility and front-end workflow, refactoring, security, interface design patterns, CSS Grid techniques, performance, and how to write better JavaScript. Plus, there will be a bunch of hands-on workshops on design, front-end and UX.

SmashingConf is focused on real-world problems and solutions. Their speakers rarely show slides: they show how they work — their setup, techniques and shortcuts for getting work done in live interactive sessions. After San Francisco they’ll bring the event to Austin, Freiberg and New York.

20. Salone del Mobile. Milano

Date: April 9–14, 2019
Location: Milan, Italy

The Salone Internazionale del Mobile was founded in 1961 as a vehicle for promoting Italian furniture and furnishings exports and soon became the most keenly awaited event in the world of furniture. With more than 370,000 attendees on average from 188 different nations, the Salone is as a laboratory for experimentation and cross-pollution, a place for interface and new opportunities for reflection on the world of design and designing.

The Salone Internazionale del Mobile is split into three style categories: Classic, which draws on the values of tradition, craftsmanship and skill in the art of making furniture and objects in the classic style; Design, products that speak of functionality, innovation and boast a great sense of style and xLux, the section devoted to timeless luxury re-read in a contemporary key.

21. Moogfest

Moogfest is the synthesis of music, art and technology. Their Mission: To grow a global community of futurists who explore emerging sound technologies and design radical instruments for change.

22. OFFF Barcelona

34. Cumulus Roma

DO are the folks behind the encouragement network. Taking place on the far edge of west Wales, attracting some of the most progressive minds on the planet. 40. Offgrid Osea Island

OffGrid Sessions is an independent ideas festival that emerged from the UK media, tech and design community. OffGrid looks to bring together a collection of the interesting & interested to discuss ideas, explore different approaches and look at issues through the eyes of others.

TypeCon is an annual conference presented by the non-profit Society of Typographic Aficionados (SOTA), an international organization dedicated to the promotion, study, and support of typography and related arts.
