Manager and Leaders are two very different beasts with different roles and skillsets. To underscore this, I think it can also be challenging if you have a good manager, but poor leaders above that manager, ultimately directing departments or entire companies. That can lead to a lack of vision (or a bad vision — not sure which is worse!), poor communication and innumerable other issues that the the manager cannot fix, no matter how much they may want to.

In those situations you can see both the employee and the manager leaving. While there are many, many bad managers in the world for whom this is no excuse, you can sometimes be stuck between a rock and a hard place as a manager — you have to keep your team engaged, but oftentimes without the required support and investment from your own managers and leaders — which is a challenge with no (easy) solution. It’s a tough job!
