What’s in Your Toolbox?

Ever wonder how many different tools an architect uses during his daily routine? There are quite a few and each phase of the job has something a little bit different with some overlaps. Let’s take a look in my residential work toolbox…

The Initial Consult: This is the most basic set of tools which consists of a yellow lined pad for notes, black Paper Mate felt tip flair marker medium point, my iPhone to snap some quick photos for reference when putting together proposal and a laser if I want to grab some quick dimensions…

The Proposal: My trusty desktop, Microsoft Office Word 2007 and my calculator…

Property Survey: 8 1/2x11 white grid pad on a clipboard, Dixon Ticonderoga HB 2 pencils (fully sharpened), red & green flair medium tip marker, Hilti PD30 Laser, Laser Glasses (for exterior use), 10 foot steel tape, flashlight, Smart Tool Electronic Level, Bosch Miter digital Angle Finder, Spike by Ike attached to my iPhone, camera, dust mask (for those nasty spaces), waterproof shoes and a ladder…

Schematic/Design Development: Autocad LT 2016, printer, lots of tracing paper, scales, pencils and more pencils, eraser, black Paper Mate felt tip flair marker medium point, colored pencils, straight edge, Sketchup 2017 for some occasional 3d modeling, yard-foot-inch calculator, email and job photos…

Construction Documents: The power horse in this phase is Autocad LT 2016, foot-inch calculator, Building Codes, all necessary catalogues (hard copy and online) and finally a bullet tip Sharpie and State Seal…

The Past: Has my toolbox changed in the last 35 years? Absolutely! When I started very few people used a computer (I can count on one hand the people I knew who had any knowledge) so everything was done by hand — drawing and model building with chipboard/foamcore. Here is a look at some of the tools of my past, at least the ones that I still have laying around …

What was your favorite tool of the past? If I had to pick one I would go with the electric eraser with the pointer attachment on top! Let me know below and be sure to click on the heart and show me some love!
