You Should Be Your Priority

With how busy and hectic life can get, and how often we feel that we have to be there for others; whether its kids, spouses, friends, colleagues, etc we often get caught up in the messiness of life that we forget to take a step back and have time for ourselves. Now I know most of you are thinking “well I barely have time to breathe!” or “how am I supposed to take time away from the people who need me”. My response to first one is, you should be your first priority (or definitely top 3), and my response to the second statement is, well how are you supposed to give your full self to someone if you aren’t fully there because you’re exhausted and have a million things running through your head?

I’m not trying to tell you to not help other people or to not do any of the things on your long list of errands. What I’m doing is reminding you how important you are. How important your well being and mental health are, because I think people often forget how important they are, or they think they will be judged for prioritizing “me” time over other things. Now I’m not saying you should take 2+ hours a day of spa time, what I suggest is giving yourself at least 30 minutes a day to do something for you, whether its meditation, running, a nap, whatever you want, to help you get away from the stress and to clear your mind.

Start off doing this at least twice a week and transition to everyday. I guarantee your mood will change to a happier/positive one, you will feel more energized, and you will be able to properly take care of the people and things you need to take care of. The only way you can give your best self is if you make time to become your best self. Remember your mental health is just as important and even more crucial than your physical health.
