School

Tick

We met with the principal and Elsa’s teacher on Monday to talk about Elsa and her transition back into school after her surgery.

It was a really good meeting and any worries I had about Elsa going back to school was laid to rest very quickly.

Mr B and Miss C were really open and reassuring about having Elsa back at school when she is ready, and to make it as normal as possible for her. We couldn’t really tell them much in terms of how limited Elsa is going to be in terms of her mobility etc as we still don’t know. But, what we could tell them was that she is probably going to be in a wheelchair of some kind and she will be in a splint too.

In order to keep school as normal as possible for Elsa, Elsa’s teacher is happy to have her in class without me. She is happy to take her to the toilet which is a huge relief and so very kind of her too. I was mentally preparing myself to be Elsa’s caregiver at school but to be told Miss C was happy enough to do it, a weight lifted off my shoulders! It was massive. This breath I seemed to have been holding inside was suddenly gone.

When Elsa needs to be taken to the toilet, her teacher can get two of the student councils from next door to come into the classroom while she takes Elsa to the bathroom. Fortunately the girl’s toilet right beside Elsa’s class doesn’t have a cubicle and is just one bathroom so hopefully getting a wheelchair in there will be easy enough!

They also advised they will make up a roster so that different children from years 6 can take Elsa outside and be with her during break times. This is so thoughtful of them and they have really put a lot of thought into it. I will also be able to park right outside the office to get Elsa in and out and there is ramp on the side of the building which leads up to her classroom.

I will be forever grateful to the school for their flexibility in accommodating Elsa during this time. Knowing that school is taken care of, I have no worries there anymore. So that’s one thing I can tick off! Now, to meet with the surgeon on Monday 18th August, to ask all our questions and we should be good to go (hopefully!).

Today at assembly Elsa got her first Certificate of Achievement for “Learning how to show resilience when faced with a challenge”. I am so proud of her and this is going to be very fitting for what’s about to come!

Elsa with her learning certificate!
