What a week

From winter illness to a sick dog

The saying “it doesn’t rain, it pours” would be quite fitting for the Wright household this week!

The winter bugs have taken a toll with our family this year. First Lucas who was pretty under the weather and had a day off school. Then I got sick and then Elsa.

I was knocked by a double whammy this year — a sinus infection and strep throat. It hit me hard for some reason and it was a toughie. I managed to get through it with the help of some delicious home cooking by a dear friend (her garlic soup was magical!), Daniel coming home from work early in order to look after the kids, and having friends collect the kids for me from school. It meant I was able to lie in bed and give my body the rest it needed and it sure needed it.

Whilst Elsa got a cold she got off fairly easily. I did get a call from school asking me to pick her up as she was in the sick bay with a sore ear. I took her to the A&E as she was quite distressed and they gave her some pamol while we waited to see the Dr.

The pamol kicked in pretty fast and she was like a different child. Back to her normal happy energetic self! The wait to see the Dr was over an hour long and I then had to get Elsa to her dental appointment so we left. The dentist wasn’t much fun as Elsa was pretty anxious there but we got the sealants done on Elsa’s teeth which was a relief. Another thing done before the 27th.

I ended up taking Elsa to see my GP and got her ears checked out. He said her ear looked a bit recessed but ok. He thought the Eustachian tube was getting a bit compressed with the amount of “stuff” in Elsa’s nose due to her cold. Nasal spray seems to have helped and opened up things thank goodness and no more mention of a sore ear anymore.

So just when things started to look up Kali, our 10 year old black Labrador became seriously ill and without any warning. She has never been sick in her entire life so this threw us through a hoop. She was throwing up, not eating or drinking, crying, shaking all over and generally not well at all.

Blood tests showed that she has an infection in her liver. They don’t know what kind of infection or how it got there so she has been treated with two antibiotic injections and has a week long course of antibiotic pills. I really hope this nails it and she gets back to her usual bouncy happy self as we are off to Queenstown next Friday and then it’s Elsa’s surgery after that. I need the fur child to be well!

A very forlorn looking Kali.
