Everyone knows that the only way to get most things done now days, is by using the internet. I mean, you use it to pay bills, shop, even read the newspaper. In this “futuristic,” world that we live in, we got to look out for the little people, our grandparents. It’s time we repay them for all the great things that they have done for us.

Before you can actually teach them about using the internet, you got to first somehow bring up the subject.

Me: “Hey Grandma want to learn how to FaceTime/Skype with me whenever you want?”

Grandma: “What is that? Can’t I just talk to you on the phone instead”?

Me: “FaceTime/Skype is something I can use to talk to you face to face. And no, you can’t just talk to me on the phone, I’ll be too busy for that.”

Grandma: “Fine, Show Me.”

And just like that, you start your conversation about the internet. Teaching your Grandma about all the posibilities it has.

But, Where should do begin ………………..

Explaining the internet to someone who didn’t grow up with using it, is like trying to teach a dog in tricks. It won’t be easy, but as ling as you believe, anything is possible.

Now that you have talked to your grandparent(s) about trying the internet, you should first try to familiarize them with the computer if they have never used one before. Luckily if they have, you can just get them started right away.

Grandma: “ What does this button do, how come it’s not doing anything? I thought you said you were going to show me how to use the internet.”

Me: “ Grandma that’s the space, it’s not doing anything because I didn’t show you how to open the web browser yet. Don’t worry, I’ll show you how to use the internet in no time.”

Grandma: “Fine.”

It maybe rocky at first, but hopefully as time passes, it will get a little easier for them..

So it’s time, your going to teach them about the internet. The first thing you have is tell them to find browser application, such as Safari, Google Chrome, Firefox, etc. In my case, Google Chrome.

Me: “Ok, look for the red, yellow, and green circle. When you find it, tap the rectangle in the middle, that’s your mouse. You use that to click the apps that you want to open.”

Grandma: “Ok, ok. I found it, what does this do again. Why did it bring me some weird page that’s blank?”

Me: “This is a web browser, this is where you search for the things that you want to see. That is why the page is blank.”

Grandma: “ok.”

After explaining to them about, “what a web browser is”, try get them search something on the web browser . Maybe a video, news article, anything that will get them excited.

And if they end up liking it, maybe they’ll decide to use the internet more often. Maybe save money on the weekly newspapers.

Hopefully with these tips, you will be able to teach your grandparents about the internet a little bit more easily.
