Url structure plays an important role in SEO. It is like a tool which is beneficial for both Google and users. Url structure should be search friendly. Your website’s keyword ranking also depends on your website’s url structure. Url structure is planned as they can be tricky according to the searches. Getting right url structure includes a complex blend of usability & accessibility factors. So, there are some rules which we can follow some tips for set up our website for future SEO success.

Try to Use Your Targeted Keywords

When you create a useful and informative website, every time you add a new page with your domain. The page should have some purpose as there is reason for existence. Your page should be discovered by the right people and Google crawlers too. So, keyword research strategy should be followed according to the relevant terms. What explains your page, so your page name or url structure should be according to your page descriptive information.

As there are multiple pages exist in the website, so url structure should be planned according to the page about info.

The biggest challenge we face to set up sitewide urls. We have to build up sound structure cause of sub-domains and conflicting paths to arrive at similar products. In E-commerce portals or big portals, we have to decide about its categories and sub-categories. So, it’s essential to layout your structure in advance.

Avoid Excessive Words & Characters

A user can understand by looking your url what describes your page. You need not to include every single preposition or conjunction. You should avoid excessive words & characters like and, the, of etc. Google will derive all the meaning it requires too.

You should not use repeated words or keywords within urls. Using same keywords or repetition words multiple times due to increasing ranking chances, it will lead to the spammy url structure.

Case Sensitive

There is common thing to find multiple versions of same url with lower-case and upper-case letters. Use canonical tags for this.

Some web developers used to make relative urls. But problem with relative urls for SEO is that they are totally depend on the context. When context changes, URL may not work. So, for SEO purpose, it’s better to use absolute url instead of relative urls.

Stabilize Different Versions of Your Site

There are 2 major versions of any website: www and without www. We can add (https) for security purpose and non-secure (HTTP) version too. Most SEOs use 301 redirects for one version of the site. This tells search engine that a particular URL has moved permanently to another URL.

Alternatively, you can specify your preferred version in Google Webmaster Tools in Configuration >>Settings >>Preferred Domain.

However, this has certain drawbacks:

Proper Use of Canonical Tags

Canonical Tags also play an important role in SEO & very helpful piece of code when you have multiple versions of same pages. By adding canonical tag, you can tell to the Google about your multiple pages, which one is preferred version.

Note: The canonical tag should be applied only with the purpose of helping search engines decide on your canonical URL. For redirection of site pages, use redirects.

And, for paginated content, it makes sense to use rel=”next” and rel=”prev” tags in most cases.
