The philosophers of ancient Greece devoted many works to freedom and independence. According to Plato, a person whose actions are aimed at achieving the well-being of the entire community is free.
Aristotle called for achieving happiness by using life’s opportunities and fulfilling one’s desires.
Epictetus insisted on the importance of human aspirations and spoke of the need to follow the will of God. Thus, everyone is likened to God and becomes free.
In ancient times, the philosopher Aristippus of Cyrene called for independence. The great thinker’s Code contains the rules of success that allow a person to live a fulfilling life without regretting missed chances and wasted time.
Guideline XI — INDEPENDENCE

Independence is the right to lead one’s own life. Without independence you cannot be the captain of your life. Freedom means that you share values on equal terms. You do not own unpaid debts. When you accumulate debts, you lose your independence.
Such freedom is characteristic of a strong-willed person, who is able to bear responsibility for actions and realize the consequences. Faith in one’s own strengths helps to get more out of life and go beyond office life.

In the middle of the XIX century, one American boy dreamed of making hundred thousand dollars. Almost a century later, his fortune totaled 1.4 billion, and his name was known all over the world. The famous oil tycoon John Davison Rockefeller achieved fame and fortune through a desire for independence and a clear goal.

The rule of John Rockefeller:
“Work less for someone else. The more you work for others, the poorer you become. If you do not have enough money, start your own business right away! Do not come up with excuses that prevent you from moving towards the goal.”
An outstanding businessman from a young age appreciated freedom and from the age of 19 he worked only for himself.
For Rockefeller, independence is freedom from all sorts of limitations. The desire to control fate, not to rely blindly on luck will help you comprehend the science of success. Fortunately, today you witness the examples of those who have risen on the wings of independence.
Nobody believed in them…
The namesakes Sachin Bansal and Binny Bansal were employees of the Indian division of Amazon. Young people who have recently graduated from university had high-paid jobs in a world famous company. It would seem, what else can one dream of? But the guys were not satisfied with the prospect of working for someone all their lives. They wanted to have their own business.
In 2007, Sachin and Binny made the fateful decision to leave Amazon and create their own online bookstore. Their relatives and acquaintances were shocked by this decision and believed that the guys just went mad. Both young men came from families that had nothing to do with business. Usually in India it is extremely difficult for such people to become big entrepreneurs. Investors were confident that the venture would fail, and rejected offers of cooperation.
“We were discouraged from running a business. No one understood why we were giving up prestigious jobs,” recalls Binny. “We had a good job. But also we had a dream,” Sachin adds.
Despite the difficulties, the company grew and developed. The sales volume has been increasing continuously. Flipkart has acquired reputation of a resource where you can find any book.
In 2009, the company finally caught the attention of investors, and millions of dollars began to be invested in it. What started out as a humble bookstore has grown into a business giant in several years, competing successfully with Amazon.
Choose independence
Freedom for a modern person is an opportunity to achieve desired goals and independently make decisions on fundamental issues. With a flexible schedule, every person chooses comfort and minimal losses. The absence of dependence makes each day easy, allowing a person to freely perform the tasks planned.
Understanding the philosophical concept of “independence” helps to find your own path which is built on achievements and victories. The main thing is to fulfill the dream without violating the boundaries of other people, forming a free and independent community of like-minded people around yourself.
