Avoiding to work as freelancer

Talking with some (tech) friends I usually hear that they are “avoiding to work as freelancer” and I agreed with them based on my previous experiences.

For contractors, mostly, is the opportunity to pay lower prices to the work force and, rarely, they are seeking for top quality professionals. This fact turns the market for freelancers a bad option: very difficult to find really good opportunities.

In fact the possibility to control your time, work from anywhere, keep in contact with great companies and professionals, be part of challenging projects and get recognized technically and financially by your tech skills — quality of good freelance jobs — are a dream coming true.

That is, the problem is not to work as a freelancer, but the choices made when selecting projects and the possibility to rely on a steady supply of new opportunities.

This are the promises I hear from Totpal and it’s screening process.

Nowadays I work with a full time contract, similar to my friends aforementioned, but without new challenges and with limited budget, especially motivated by the Brazilian financial crisis.

Every night I work in my own projects, trying “to conquer the world”, and it keeps me conected with diverse new technologies.

My plans are to give a try to Toptal, sharing the time with my own projects, and if it was successfull gradually increase the time dedicated to the Toptal freelance jobs.

From now, there is a long road to trip… and maybe, someday, after to build my good reputation, I can work exclusively as a freelancer… and entrepreneur, of course!

I hope my poor english does not prevent me from being selected to the Toptal team.
