By Armaan pal

The Aghori , Sanskrit aghora or shiv sadhu these people are known by many names but all those name have same meaning “biggest devotee of shiv”.Aghoris are not like any other religious group they perform rituals that no normal human being can imagine

ABOUT AGHORI:

If you are an Indian then you must’ve heard about them they are one of the most horrified and feared cults of India. worshippers of Lord Shiva and his female counter part Goddess Parvati.

They are mainly famous for their post-mortem rituals. Their are also many flesh eating cannibal aghori monk living in northern Indian city of Varanasi. Their rituals include eating human flesh and excrement and drinking urine from human skulls, according to them the religious practices they perform help them to gain higher level of spirituality and take them closer to god.

aghoris strongly believe that every humans soul is part of Shiva but in this world the soul is covered by astamahapasa “eight great nooses or bond” , including sensual pleasure , greed ,hatred , fear , and obsession. Aghori perform their rituals or practices for the removal these bonds.

PILGRIMAGE CENTER:

You can see aghori at different places of this country but their pilgrimage centre is “ BABA KEENARAM’S HERMITAGE “ . Here , keema ram is burried in a tomb which is the center of the pilgrimage for Aghoris and Aghoris devotees. Hinglaj mata is the kul devi or patron goddess for Aghories

WHO THEY WORSHIP AND WHY THEY WORSHIP:

In Hinduism their are 10 mahavidyas or wisdom goddess

  • TARA
  • KALI
  • TRIPURAS SUNDARI (SHODOSHI)
  • BHUVANESHVARI
  • TRIPURA BHAIRAVI
  • CHHINNAMASTA
  • BAGALAMUKHI
  • DHUMAVATI
  • MATANGI
  • KAMALA

The most popular of the 10 Mahavidyas who are worshipped by Aghoris are TARA, DHUMAVATI, BAGALAMUKHI, AND BHAIRAVI. The male Hindu deities primarily
worshipped by Aghoris are manifestation of SHIVA which are MAHAKALA, BHAIRAVA, VIRABHADRA, AVADHUTI.

Aghori worship theses god and goddess to invoke them ,once invoked can blessed Aghori with supernatural powers. Aghori perform rituals such as SHAVA SAMSKARAor SHAVA SADHANA(ritual worship incorporating the use of a corpse as the altar) to invoke the mother goddess in her form of SAMSHAN TARA (Tara Of The Cremation Grounds).

MEDICINE:

Aghori practice healing through purification as a pillar of their rituals. Their patient believes that Aghoris are able to transfer health to, and pollution away from patients as a form of “transformative healing”, due to the believed superior state of body and mind of the Aghori.

TERRIFYING LOOK OF AGHORI:

Many people say that Aghoris are cannibal. They are known to consume dead human’s flesh they believe that this connect them with spirituality and their super human powers. Aghoris are always high on alcohol and drugs such as marijuana.

A tourist who once met an Aghori, reported that he was told that the aghori was consuming a concoction of alcohol, cannabis and human ash, drinking it straight form a human skull. Aghori look like Lord Shiva for some people they also look like nightmares, they have long hair, long nails, head to toe covered in human ash, dressed in complete black and some times undressed.

The mere sight of an Aghori will frighten anyone who is too attached with materialistic life style. Aghori live quite simple and straightforward life trying to connect to god with their rituals.

THE LEFT HAND OF GOD:

In India we have many ways of experiencing reality beyond the normal. The normal way is yoga ,yoga is Ashtanga which means there are 8 limbs of yoga

  • YAMA(Abstinence)
  • NIYAMA(Observances)
  • ASANA(YOGA POSTURE)
  • PRANAYAMA(Breath Control)
  • PRATYAHARA(Withdrawal Of Senses)
  • DHARANA (Concentration)
  • DHAYANA(Meditation)
  • SANADHI(Absorption)

Yoga is called the right hand of god, then there is left hand of God which is Aghora.

Aghora is like short, sharp and quick way and yoga is long way but yoga is safer ,if aghora goes wrong you could end up dead or you could end up as a mad person.

yoga and Aghora are paths, end of the is liberation and both get you at the same end but Aghora ia a lot more riskier then the yoga.
