The Story of Brodie
“ADOPT don’t SHOP”.The story of brodie follows Brodie through his life starting from birth to the end of the story. The story is being gamified. “ I am Mosul” served as a major inspiration to this story. The issue within my local community of campbelltown is mainly unspoken about, Just in one facility the Campbelltown animal care facility, as of 28th of May 2023 there were 37 dogs available to adopt. Although the animals are out of immediate danger, it is because of irresponsible owners that Dogs and other pets are ending up forgotten, abandoned, mistreated and tortured.
The First screen the viewer is met with, is a bright white screen representing the beginning of the story and the beginningof Brodie. It uses Multimodal techniques such as sound, haptic touch, text and images all working in tandem to suck in the viewer.
The Mother Dog is represented via the faint heartbeat purposefully playing in the background, this slide and its text represent the first conscious moments of life. When the arrow is clicked to the next slides it shows Brodie growing up and enjoying his early life with his Mother dog and his littermates.
The next few slides show Brodie being adopted and the first few weeks of his new life. Going for walks. Lots of attention by his owners and full meals. This is all too common in the cases that end up resulting in surrendered animals.
As the Nights passed the ecstasy of something new faded within Brodies family, Days and weeks passed and Brodie was forgotten. The sombre noises of suburban pollution drown out Brodie and his barking and crying. When the user chooses to click to the next slide, the noises come to a halt suddenly locked outside with the noises of the cold wind, This illustrates the change in mood and the severity of the situation. And he’s super bored because he’s always locked up. Brodie barks and barks and whines and whines. The slides following show Day by day minute by minute, time goes 7 times slower for him.
With the little energy he has he barks, and uses the yard around him to play, his backyard is filled with his own faeces,.Brodie grows tired, he gnaws through aluminium and wood to escape. Brodie wanders the streets all alone. Brodie gets pretty far until two bright lights show up in the distance; the lights transform into a van, the side reads “animal control”. And then Brodie is picked up by an animal control officer.
He’s put in the van and taken to the local pound. Brodies uncomfortable but has everything he needs. He’s brought to a room and its found that his owners didn’t chip him and he isn’t ‘Brodie’ officially, He’s given number #CDS047 and put up for adoption.
Brodie started his life and didn’t know what it would become. His wagging tail became still after so much pain. Brodie is only 1 of the hundreds of stories. Dog ownership is deregulated and the suffering of innocent beings is rampant. Irresponsible individuals are given responsibility, “A total of 112,530 animals were received by RSPCA in 2019–2020. Dogs and cats were the most frequently rescued species.” — (RSPCA 2020). Brodie’s story happens too often. We must work together and stop Brodie’s story from happening again and again.“A total of 3,466 dogs and 9,714 cats were euthanased by the RSPCA in 2019–2020” — (RSPCA 2020)
