Mr. Palmer, I appreciate that this article is here. I have had similar experiences to you with “Roots”, similar struggles and awakenings. Your story as a black youth is my story as a black youth growing up in the Silicon Valley of the 1990’s. I have seen the original miniseries and had the book in my home. After conquering such Bible-sized books like “The Lord of the Rings”, tackling the challenge of “Roots” is something I consider more often these days, especially with the recent revival.
