Fear And Its Illusions - Ulysses S. Grant
The military career of Ulysses S. Grant had barley began.
The young soldier was on a long journey on the east of Texas. Food provisions started to dwindle, one of the men on his company got sick and one of his horses had died.
They were on dangerous territory, at the mercy of Indians and outlaws.
They had to journey over 100 km to reach their destiny. Grant and another man left alone, with infinity of obstacles, from rivers to cross to dangerous snakes and also wolves.
As accounted on Ulysses S Grant memories:
“On the evening of the first day out from Goliad we heard the most unearthly howling of wolves, directly in our front. The prairie grass was tall and we could not see the beasts, but the sound indicated that they were near. To my ear it appeared that there must have been enough of them to devour our party, horses and all, at a single meal.”
At this moment Grant wished his companion had proposed to return back
He would have agreed to it without a doubt, suggesting that it was very hard-hearted of them to leave their sick companion behind in the first place.
