Sakhar Puda or the engagement ceremony- This is one of the few pre wedding ceremonies that take place in a Marathi wedding. This simple show of love is to be seen to be believed. The groom’s family comes to the bride’s family with some sweets. The groom’s mother gives the bride-to-be a sari, jewelry and a packet of sugar or Sakhar Puda as a symbol of formal bonding between the two families. Sugar signifies happiness and celebration, hence, as a token it is gifted to the bride.

Kelwan- They are a series of meals organized by the families of the bride and the groom for the couple. Usually, both sides have it separately as the couple is not married yet. The close family and friends of the couple call them over for a meal to shower their blessings on them. It is private affair with no frills and fancy.

Wedding Attires- The bride looks elegant and graceful in a traditional nine yard of six yard sari. They are usually in yellow or marigold with green or purple borders. The jewelry worn is also traditional and simple. The bride looks divine in the wedding ensemble without overdoing anything. Even the groom wears an understated kurta and dhoti paired with a traditional maharashtrian cap or a turban. The simplicity in both their attires makes them stand out.

Wedding ceremonies- All the wedding ceremonies in a Marathi wedding are simple and are focused only on the traditions and values they impart. There is no element of show off or glamour in them. This makes them special and chaste.

Post Wedding ceremonies- Unlike many weddings seen in India, Marathi weddings have only grihpravesh, which is also done on a very small scale. The groom’s mother welcomes the newly wed bride into the home with a traditional aarti. The bride enters the house by kicking a glass of rice, kept at the entrance, as a symbol of prosperity. This is followed by a tea and snack for the couple and the bride’s immediate family. No emphasis is laid on the decor or grandiose of the event. The main idea is to welcome the bride into her new home with love and warmth.

Marathi weddings epitomise the true essence of a wedding which is based on traditions that are reflected through the rites and rituals and the underlying theme of love and respect. This is seen beautifully through all the simple yet graceful ceremonies.
