I was chatting with someone recently and they asked me how everything was going with joyloop. I responded the same way I often do…
“Things are either a one or a ten.”
The highs are particularly high and the lows particularly low. For some reason, the lows seem to come in succession like a set of waves. For a period of days, sometimes weeks, nothing seems to go right. Then, just when you’re ready to throw in the towel, something great happens — you sign a big retail account, you launch a new product, you get great customer feedback etc. Eventually, another storm of “lows” will roll in and the cycle will start over. That’s what happens when you start a business.
Personally, I enjoy this oscillation and the constant thrill that comes with it. I’m more than comfortable with ten, “one” days for one, “ten” day than an endless stream of “five” days. I guess it’s just the way I’m wired. However, that’s not for everyone. I’m writing about this because it’s probably the most important thing to think about before you start anything. After the initial high of launching your company wears off, you’ll be faced with this reality.
Before taking the leap, be honest with yourself and determine if you prefer ones and tens or fives. If you can wrap your head around this, early on, you’ll save yourself a lot of grief down the road.
