Besides the ‘why didn’t this CPU costs become visible at lower loads?’ there is the apparent lack of concern for human CPU cycles: saving the effort of composing a single line of code, even a non-APL line of code, took thousands of test executions to fill back up, and that was in the 70s. Nowadays, millions of tests get run in the time it takes to consider a single line of code.
