Fan Ho — Her Study

During the early 1960s, Fan Ho started to dabble in filmmaking along with photography. It was during this time that he started making independent short films. According to Wikipedia, first of these independent shot films was, Big City, Little Man, which went on to win awards at the Japan International Film Festival in 1964.

It was also around this time, in 1963, that he made the photograph titled, Her Study.

This image is of a young child studying on a balcony against the backdrop chaotic Hong Kong architecture. I find that there is a certain contrast between the harsh street background and the simple innocence of the child studying.

Just like the last image, the photographer has intentionally darkened the edges of the photograph to contain the viewer’s eye and stop it from escaping the frame.

In 1995 Fan Ho moved to California where he began going through his negatives and began showing his work again in the local galleries and art scenes. Fan Ho passed away in San Jose on 19 June 2016.

This blog is the last post in a series of posts about Fan Ho’s work. Here are the links to Part 1 and Part 2.
