I personally never thought anyone would actually say something as ridiculous as “Sell me this pen!” during a sales interview. I was wrong. It will happen to you too. And, to avoid panic, you should know exactly what to say back.

If you want to build a marvelous career in sales, here is the best reponse to give regardless who is asking you the question:

‘’Of course I can’t sell you this pen, you stupid asshole! I showed up to this interview two minutes ago, and don’t have any context whatsoever, the types of pens you like, or even what you need to use this pen for!

“Assuming that I still need to meet my sales quota, I need to first build a rapport with you (even though you ask stupid questions, that’s right), here are the questions I need to get some thoughts from you:

1. ‘’How long you have been in the market looking for pens?’’

2. “How often do you use a pen?’’

3.’’Will you be in the market looking for a pen in the next 2 weeks?’’

“If you are not, then have a spectacular day! Maybe I can sell you a pen next year…”
