Great and thoughtful article. I’ve been noticing these kind of issues with imdb ratings for years, independent films in general are usually dragged down by imdb fanboys who can’t stand more complex films that deal with nonmainstream themes or feature people that don’t look like them. It’s more than just racism, which only makes it that much worse. So not only would i check movies with 7.x ratings, many of my favorite movies which won awards have even ratings in the 6.x and even 5.x (which sadly many people automatically avoid), yet many of these same movies are easily on the level of Moonlight in terms of acting, filmmaking, relevance, theme etc. To the point that every shitty blockbuster gets higher ratings than award winning films from all over the world by film auteurs. So the ratings really are useless, especially for newer cinema. I’ve been writing about this on my tumblr so it was nice to stumble onto this article. People can be very shallow and cinephiles with an open mind are a true rarity. Not just in the case of Moonlight. But this article does provide a great example of the big problem that sites like imdb have. You can ignore them, but since so many people read them and check the ratings (which are incorporated in numerous other sites) they influence the whole world population whether or not they see a particular movie or not. So in that sense the damage can be immense.
