I have resumed my Iyengar Yoga practice after a year of ‘no practise’ and I am back at the beginner level classes to correct my postures. In two classes, I have attempted to perfect my Tadasana and Adhomukha svanasana.

When I run through the instructions in my head, I realize how you cannot imagine directing your body to listen to your mind, if you aren’t a yoga practitioner.

Disclaimer: Do not try any of these tricks at home without the guidance of an Iyengar Yoga instructor who directly trained under BKS Iyengar or his students.

With practise I can…

  1. Fix and contract my shoulder blades into the sternum
  2. Peel the skin away from the muscle
  3. Push my tail bone into my pubic bone
  4. Rotate my outer upper arm towards my spine
  5. Turn my inner wrists, inside out to let my thumbs touch the back of my thighs
  6. Make a wedge of my forefinger and thumb against the wall to make them do a split
  7. Lift the breast tissue to release the lower ribs
  8. Identify, isolate and will the floating ribs to move
  9. Widen the upper shoulder blades while locking the lower shoulder blades
  10. Move the skin of my back in one direction and the skin of the front of the body in another
  11. Lengthen the sides of my neck
  12. Send my shoulder muscle into my triceps
  13. Turn my inner forearm out
  14. Roll my collarbone away from my head
  15. Broaden my shoulders evenly
  16. Widen my collarbone on the outside and inside
  17. Release the collarbone from the sternum with the pull of my arms
  18. Draw an imaginary line from the sternum to the base of my throat
