18 tricks I am learning in Iyengar Yoga
2 min readApr 21, 2016
I have resumed my Iyengar Yoga practice after a year of ‘no practise’ and I am back at the beginner level classes to correct my postures. In two classes, I have attempted to perfect my Tadasana and Adhomukha svanasana.
When I run through the instructions in my head, I realize how you cannot imagine directing your body to listen to your mind, if you aren’t a yoga practitioner.
Disclaimer: Do not try any of these tricks at home without the guidance of an Iyengar Yoga instructor who directly trained under BKS Iyengar or his students.
With practise I can…
- Fix and contract my shoulder blades into the sternum
- Peel the skin away from the muscle
- Push my tail bone into my pubic bone
- Rotate my outer upper arm towards my spine
- Turn my inner wrists, inside out to let my thumbs touch the back of my thighs
- Make a wedge of my forefinger and thumb against the wall to make them do a split
- Lift the breast tissue to release the lower ribs
- Identify, isolate and will the floating ribs to move
- Widen the upper shoulder blades while locking the lower shoulder blades
- Move the skin of my back in one direction and the skin of the front of the body in another
- Lengthen the sides of my neck
- Send my shoulder muscle into my triceps
- Turn my inner forearm out
- Roll my collarbone away from my head
- Broaden my shoulders evenly
- Widen my collarbone on the outside and inside
- Release the collarbone from the sternum with the pull of my arms
- Draw an imaginary line from the sternum to the base of my throat
